Tarryn awarded top Guiding honours

During her years at Brownies, Tarryn earned her Golden Hand along with 21 interest badges.

18-year-old Edenvale resident, Tarryn Holmes, was recently presented with the Protea Award.

The award is the highest one obtainable for Guiding in South Africa.

Tarryn has been a member of Girl Guides South Africa since she joined Teddies at the age of four.

She loved the outdoors and soon moved from Teddies to Brownies.

During her years at Brownies, Tarryn earned her Golden Hand along with 21 interest badges.

At 13, Tarryn moved on to join Cutty Sark Girl Guides based in Highway Gardens.

Tarryn earned over 50 interest badges in five years, as well as her Chiefs Challenge Award.

She followed the natural progression from Guides was Rangers, which caters for girls aged 14 to 18 years.

While in Rangers, girls learn about becoming responsible citizens and are challenged to give back as far as possible.

Tarryn played canoe, polo, attended regional and national camps, hiked and did community service. She also attended PLTU, which is the Scout leadership training programme.

As part of her Protea Award, Tarryn had to qualify as an assistant Guider as well as arrange a regional event.

Tarryn also earned her Ranger Camp Permit and Boating Permit.

Tarryn is the first Cutty Sark Ranger since the 1980’s to earn this prestigious award.

She is currently studying a BSc at St Andrews University in North Carolina, USA, where she is on a swimming scholarship.
