About nine water meters have been stolen along Jules Street this past weekend.
The ward councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, claims the water meters are being sold to scrap metal dealers. He said the dealers along Jules Street should be monitored daily.
He also added that the recyclers pulling trolleys late at night should be stopped by the SAPS and searched in order to curb this problem.
Johannesburg Water spokesperson, Ms Millicent Kabwe, has warned the public, saying stealing municipal infrastructure is a criminal offence and residents should report such acts when they witness them.
“Not only does it cost Johannesburg Water resources to replace the stolen meters, it also inconveniences the targeted residents. We rely heavily on the assistance of the communities to report suspicious activities in their neighbourhoods,” she added.
