Alleged killer appears in court

A 22-year-old man appeared in the South Gauteng Court on Friday in connection with the death of Ms Mary-Lee Mucambe (20).

Ms Mucambe was found in the boot of her car in Jules Street on Sunday two weeks ago.

The Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Captain Doniah Mothutsane, said the man was arrested in Witbank on Wednesday afternoon.

“For now he is facing a case of murder. He may face other charges, depending on the investigations,” she said.

Ms Mucambe’s brother, Ayrton, said he last saw his sister on Friday when she dropped him off at a friend’s house.

He said she was going to meet her ex-boyfriend in Eastgate that day.

“That was the last time I saw her warm and beautiful smile. She was an amazing sister. An intelligent young woman, sometimes I think she was too intelligent for me,” he said.

He said his sister did not come home on Friday and she had not spoken to any family or friends.

“That was not how she usually did things. She would not just disappear without telling anyone. We started the search and reported her as missing. On Sunday I received a call from a friend who had noticed her car on Jules Street,” he said.

Ayrton said that when he and other members of the family found the car, they left his mother guarding it.

“Because we also reported the car as missing, we had to report to the police. We hoped it would help us and the police find her. My mother waited there to make sure nobody tried to move the car. She did not know that her only daughter was in the car, dead,” said Ayrton.

He added that the family was shattered about the police discovery.

“She had multiple stab wounds and was shoved into the boot of her car. Who would do that to a warm, loving and trusting woman? Or maybe these characteristics were used to her disadvantage,” said Ayrton.

Ayrton said that there would be a memorial service for his sister at her home in Mondeor on Friday.

He said she would be buried in Mozambique the following day.

Capt Mothutsane could not confirm if Ms Mucambe’s cellular phone was found in the possession of the ex-boyfriend’s new girlfriend.

“I don’t know that. What I do know is that a young man was arrested in Witbank for the murder. Who he is and how is he related to the deceased will form part of the investigation,” said Cpt Mothutsane.
