Local house attains heritage status

Ms Bird said the house was the first home built in the 1950s to be recognised as a heritage site.

The home of a Cyrildene resident, humanitarian and human rights activist, has been conferred as a heritage home by the chairperson of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, Ms Flo Bird.

Ms Bird said the house was the first home built in the 1950s to be recognised as a heritage site.

According to Ms Bird, the L Ron Hubbard House was the product of architecture Mr Frank Jarrett.

“This is one of Mr Jarrett’s finest works. The house was built for the Greek timber merchant Msnos Broulidakis, and was also home to Mr L Ron Hubbard. We have to thank Mr Hubbard for the restoration of the interior, which had been greatly changed over the 40 years,” said Ms Bird during the unveiling of the blue plaque marking the house as a heritage site.

Mr Luc Dubois, from the L Ron Hubbard House, said the home was open for visits by the public, for free.

The L Ron Hubbard House is located at 40 Hannnaben Street.
