Malvern’s swimming pool gets a revamp
The area's ward councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, said the renovations are being done by the planned Capex and Opex budget for the 2014/2015 community development department.
The Malvern Swimming Pool is getting a make-over and soon the community will be able to enjoy themselves in the revamped facility.
The Malvern Swimming Pool was built in 1932 and it is situated in Marathon Street. When it was originally built, the pool formed part of a tennis court. There was also a swimming club and water polo team. According to old residents of the area, the first swimming gala was held in 1944.
The Community Liason Officer, Mr Jeffrey Ncanana, said the renovations started on October 10. The work is expected to be completed by December 15.
The area’s ward councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, said the renovations are being done by the planned Capex and Opex budget for the 2014/2015 community development department.
According to Mr Ncanana, once the renovations are complete and the pool is officially open, tariffs will be implemented for those wishing to use the pool. These prices have yet to be announced.
Clr Spadino said no major challenges have been experienced during the renovations, except that the work is not going as fast as they had hoped it would.
“Through this project, 20 people from this community have managed to get jobs”, said Mr Ncanana.
He said he would like to see residents making full use of the pool as it is made for them, unlike before when it was only used by the schools in the area.
“The workers have been able to gain valuable skills through this project,” he added.
Mr Arthur Baloyi, who is supervising the project, said he is pleased with the progress made and believes they will be able to finish on time.
“The revamp of the pool is good for the community because they need the facilities and the people working on the project are getting valuable skills, which they can also use to get jobs when the project is complete, “ said Clr Spadino.
Mr Wilson Cele, who is a sub-contractor, said the community will need swimming coaches for the children because it will help keep the youngsters away from the streets and away from crime and drugs.
The pool is 25 metres by 25 metres. There is also a children’s pool.
Once complete, it will be open to the public on weekdays from 10am to 4.30pm and on weekends from 9am to 4:30pm.
