Dilapidated clubhouse an eyesore

The ward 118 councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, said the condition of the building is promoting a number of social ills in the community.

The dilapidated building of the now defunct Cleveland and Malvern Tennis Club has raised concerns from the community.

The ward 118 councillor, Clr Mike Spadino, said the condition of the building is promoting a number of social ills in the community.

“I have been inundated with complaints from the community, saying the property is an eyesore in the area. There are allegations of prostitution occurring in the building, but I cannot confirm this. The building’s windows and doors are broken. The roof is collapsing and the floor is warped. The taps are broken and people are urinating on the floor as the toilet is broken,” said Clr Spadino.

Clr Spadino urged residents to play their part in keeping the area safe and clean.

“Stop illegal dumping, especial in this property. If you see people dumping or vandalising this building, report them to the police or to me,” he said.

He said the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) must take responsibility to fix and maintain the building.

An inquiry was sent to the CoJ’s Nkosinathi Nkabinde, Lesigo Lala and Nkosinathi Lekotjo, in the communications department, on Wednesday, February 18.

Comment was requested for February 19, by 12-noon.
