Driver arrested for opening false case

Two suspects were arrested by the Jeppe SAPS for the theft of motor vehicle which took place on Tuesday, February 24.

According to Warrant Officer Richard Munyai, from the Jeppe SAPS, the victim claimed he was driving a Toyota Hi-Ace when he stopped at Derby Road in Bertrams to buy cigarettes.

When he came back, he was approached by three men, one of whom produced a firearm.

According to the victim, the suspects took his car and left him stranded.

The victim went to the police station and opened a case.

A case of carjacking was opened and investigations started.

W/O Munyai said two suspects, aged 20 and 25, were later arrested while a third is still on the run.

The victim was contacted the following day and asked to come to the police station to explain what really happened.

He confessed that he was not actually hijacked but that the vehicle was stolen from his residence.

He claimed to be afraid of the taxi owner.

W/O Munyai said the victim was arrested and charged with perjury.

The SAPS urges residents to not open false cases, as it is a serious offence.

“Cases like these affect the country’s crime statistics, while many cases reported have not actually taken place, especially carjacking,” said W/O Munyai

All the suspects will appear in court soon and police investigations are continuing.
