JMPD catches illegal dumpers in the act
Residents were caught dumping rubbish by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) sector manager, Sergeant Tefu, on Monday, February 2.
The residents were caught dumping at the corner 6th Avenue and 2nd Street in Bez Valley.
Clr Carlos da Rocha said he was called to the scene after the owner of the house, where the tenants reside, allegedly threatened Sgt Tefu when he told them to clean up where they had dumped.
Clr Da Rocha said he feels the offenders should have received a fine because illegal dumping is a serious problem in his ward.
“There is improvement in dumping because Pikitup has been doing its job, but that will not help if residents keep dumping illegally,” he said.
Clr Da Rocha commended Sgt Tefu for the work he is doing.
“This is the cooperation we need and residents must also do their part, because without their help, we will continue to have this problem,” said Clr Da Rocha.
The JMPD spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, said residents should know that illegal dumping is a punishable crime.
“If a resident is found dumping illegally they will get a fine. We have different categories of fines; a small load like papers or bottles could land you a R500 fine. For a bakkie load, the fine is R1 000. Building rubble, like cement or bricks, could get you a R1 500 fine,” said Chief Supt Minaar.
Chief Supt Minnaar urged residents not to dump because it creates a lot of problems.
“Illegal dumping is a health hazard, as it attracts rats and can lead to all sorts of problems,” he said.
Residents who witness incidents of illegal dumping are urged to report the act as a matter of urgency.
Residents will need to submit the following when reporting illegal dumpin:
- Date and time of the incident, the location, type of material dumped and the registration number of the vehicle if possible.
