Local spelling bee buzzes back for round two

Mr Mcinga said those who wish to compete in this year’s competition can register by sending an email to Ms Thembi Mncwabe at thembim@caxton.co.za

The registration for the Joburg East Express Spelling Bee competition 2015 is drawing closer.

Last year, the inaugural edition of this event was well received.

During the recent Caxton Excellence Awards, this event won Best Original Idea.

Caxton’s branch manager, Mr Christopher Mcinga, said this year the competition will be open to grade 7 pupils living in Germiston, Kempton Park and Johannesburg East schools.

“The event is powered by Caxton Community Newspapers and is sponsored by Hirsch’s and Waltons. It will test pupils’ abilities to spell. This Spelling Bee is developed to afford our future leaders an opportunity to grow their skills of public speaking, while improving speech and promoting the unerring usage of the English language, pronunciation and spelling,” he said.

He added that the competition will help the contestants, even in their future endeavours.

“As the custodians of the future of this country, it is in our interest to tackle all the channels that seek improvement within the education of this country to mould our pupils for a better tomorrow,” he said.

Mr Mcinga said those who wish to compete in this year’s competition can register by sending an email to Ms Thembi Mncwabe at thembim@caxton.co.za

“In the email, please provide her with your school’s name and contact information for the school. Your school will receive further instructions and will be automatically registered,” he said.

He added that the schools will have to conduct monthly knock-out rounds, whereby it will receive a list of words to test the students.

“Each month, the school will supply the newspaper with a list of names of pupils who have made it to the next round. The contest starts on May 11 and the school registrations close on May 8,” he said.
