Flight for Springbok Award

Using over 130 lashings, the boys managed to achieve what many thought was impossible.

112 years after the Wright Brothers first flew their Wright Flyer, Carl Holmes (17) and a patrol of younger Scouts pioneered a half-size Wright Flyer.

Carl, a Scout at the Harmelia Gardens Air Scout Troop in Edenvale, selected the Wright Flyer for his Springbok Award Pioneering Project because, “I am an Air Scout and my Springbok Award is the culmination of all my years in Scouting, everything should be air related”.

At the end of March, Carl and his six co-pilots lashed together many poles and staves to resemble the Wright Brothers’ first plane.

Using over 130 lashings, the boys managed to achieve what many thought was impossible.
