Pedestrian deaths on the rise

It should be noted that although patients are treated medically, patients die at a later stage due to complications related to the incident.

The rate of pedestrian deaths has increased astoundingly over the years.

Dr Marilyn Hoggan, a registrar from the Forensic Pathology Services in Johannesburg, said when examining pedestrians from transport-related instances, it can be discovered that pedestrians may survive the accident after initial examination.

It should be noted that although patients are treated medically, patients die at a later stage due to complications related to the incident.

The injuries suffered in this instance include patients who have sustained head injuries, who are comatose and ventilated, who may develop pneumonia while recovering from the head injury resulting in the later death of the patient said Dr Hoggan.

For this reason, it is important for pedestrians to take care when walking or crossing roads which are not demarcated areas.

The number of pedestrian deaths can thus be minimised by making use of pavements, and wearing attire that is recognisable to drivers, especially during the night or in foggy weather.

Motorists are urged to look out for pedestrians and maintain the speed limit where avoiding a pedestrian is possible.

Pedestrians need to be cautious, as most cases of pedestrian incidents result in fatal injuries.
