MCS to host August meeting

The meeting will discuss the activities that have been taking place at the reserve as well as outlining future plans.

The Modderfontein Conservation Society (MCS) August meeting will take place at the Modderfontein Town Hall at 1 Casino Road on August 18.

The meeting will discuss the activities that have been taking place at the reserve as well as outlining future plans.

Mr Boaz Tsebe, of the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), will be the guest speaker at the August meeting.

Mr Robbie Vermont, the membership secretary for MCS, said new toilets, vicious attacks on Eucalyptus trees by bugs and beetles, the impact of human activities and the control of alien and invasive vegetation are all included in the many and varied management operations taking place in the Modderfontein Reserve.

“These and other developments will be outlined by Mr Tsebe who manages the Reserve. As manager of the Reserve, he will report back on progress made in the past year. In addition to attacking invasive alien vegetation, Mr Tsebe’s vegetation management programme includes the rehabilitation of the area. Substantial progress has been made in the all-out war on Robinia, Black Wattle, Bug Weed and Pom Pom Weed, among others,” said Mr Vermont.

Development and maintenance of new and exciting walking trails by members of the Conservation Society has been completed. Indigenous trees, shrubs and aloes have been planted in the reserve over the past months and an environmental education centre is in the process of being completed.

Visitors are welcome. An entrance fee of R30 is charged to help cover expenses.
