The Johannesburg East police cluster commander Major General Ndaba commended police officers from the Joburg East police cluster together with Metro police officers for the good work they had done.
This comes after the officers had recovered firearms, stolen and hijacked cars and arrested suspects. “The good work was done in different police stations such a Jeppe, Hillbrow and Yeoville that form part of the Johannesburg East cluster,” said Jeppe Police Station spokesperson Captain Richard Munyai.
“One case, in particular, was a case of Metro officers who were robbed of their firearms… On 5 August, two Metro police officers were attending to an accident scene at the corner of Anderson and Berea streets in Jeppestown at about 9pm. While they were busy, three suspects approached them from the back and ordered them to lie down and took their firearms.
“On 6 August, police officers received information that two of the three suspects had been spotted at a tavern in Maboneng. They arrested one suspect at the scene in possession of a stolen firearm, believed to belong to one of the officers. The other suspect fled and police ran after him.”
He went on to say they cornered him at the corner of Anderson and Marshall streets in Jeppestown. He shot at the police and the police shot back. The police shot him in the neck, abdomen, head and left leg and he died at the scene.
Police also seized a firearm from the deceased. Both firearms were the ones that had been stolen from the officers. The third suspect was still at large.
Then, on August 19, police received information that the third suspect was seen drinking alcohol outside a tavern at Main and Maritzburg streets in Jeppestown. Upon arriving at the scene, the police arrested the 24-year-old suspect and detained him.
The cluster commander together with her management, Brigadier Govendsamy Mariemuthoo who is the deputy cluster commander, Brigadier Vukile Ntandane who is the Hillbrow station commander, Brigadier Thembekile Kuboni, who is the Jeppe station commander and other senior members all congratulated the officers.
