Yukon house owner speak at ABC Club
BEDFORDVIEW: ABC Club hosts Yukon House owner for a little history lesson.
The Anneliese Breakfast Club (ABC) hosted its monthly breakfast event on 16 February
Founder Anneliese Plettenbacher said the club’s aim is for the women to get together to raise funds and donations for charity. “We collect clothes and baby jumpers and blankets to donate to the needy. We also raise funds for Little Eden and distribute baby donations to the Edenvale Hospital,” she said.
The women were celebrating the Month of Love at Bedfordview’s Mercure Hotel for their first meeting of the year.
The keynote speaker of the day was Loretta Chamberlain, owner of the historical Yukon house in Bez Valley.
She spoke about the history of the house which, over the decades, has been home to mayors and millionaires. The house was built between 1907 and 1911 for TF Allen, a businessman who was also the mayor of Johannesburg from 1917 to 1919. It once contained four stained glass windows of exceptional significance portraying commerce, justice, industry and agriculture, which were stolen in mysterious circumstances. It was declared a National Monument under the old National Monuments Act in the early 1980s and is currently a provincial heritage site. The club’s next meeting is scheduled for 16 March.
