The SAPS, Metro Police Departments and Gauteng Traffic members have combined forces to deal with crime.

Together the three law enforcement groups will conduct Operation Paseka during school and Easter holidays .

Colonel Lungelo Dlamini, provincial spokesperson of the SAPS, said the operation is already underway and hopes to create more police visibility.

In line with creating awareness, Dlamini gave community members tips on how to prevent crime.

Members of the public should always take care of the following at shopping malls:

  •  Not to fall victim to car jammers by making sure their vehicles are properly locked.
  •  Make sure that all windows are closed before leaving the vehicle.
  •  Not to accept help from strangers at the shopping malls.
  •  Exercise caution and vigilance when withdrawing money from ATM machines.
  •  Not to carry a lot of money around.
  •  Not to leave valuable items on the vehicle seats
  •  Always inform security if there are suspicious people and vehicles around the shopping mall.

When travelling, the following should be avoided:

  •  Giving lifts or stopping for strangers.
  •  Leaving valuables lying around in the car which can be easily taken during a smash and grab.

While at home, members of the public should always take care of the following:

  •  Not to allow strangers to enter your property.
  •  Ensure that gates and doors are properly locked.
  •  Tell your domestic worker and children to report suspicious activities.
  •  Have the emergency numbers of the police and local police station on speed dial or close at hand.

“Police urge the members of the community to report any suspicious individuals and vehicles to the police emergency number 10111 at all times,” said Dlamini.
