It is believed that the driver lost control and mounted the pavement. Cleveland police spokesperson Captain Johan Jordaan said the driver was arrested for culpable homicide and drunk driving. “He is expected to appear in court soon while police investigations continue,” said Jordaan.
Ward 118 Councillor Neuren Pietersen has pleaded with motorists to be more vigilant and has condemned drinking and driving. “It is school holidays and drinking and driving are unacceptable. There are many children and pedestrians in Malvern. Motorists need to be aware of the high risks they pose when not fully aware of their surroundings and not fully in control of their vehicle,” said Pietersen. He sent his condolences to the family of the children.
Details of the two children who were injured were not available at the time of publication. An update will follow.
