Yeoville police held a public meeting addressing crime issues affecting residents. The meeting was held at Hunter and Raleigh Streets in Yeoville.
The station commander Colonel Mpe Lobisi Motaung, sector managers, Social Crime Prevention police officials and corporate communications police officials briefed residents about the challenges of crime and the way forward in eradicating crime around the precinct.
“Residents were briefed about crime hotspots around the area, lawlessness of public drinking, unlawful shebeens, motorists who contravene road regulations and the alarming rate of increases in crime,” said the station’s spokesperson Captain Sifiso Mabizela.
He added that members of the public raised concerns about poor police visibility. “They said a satellite office of the station should be established along Raleigh Street as it is where crime affects them the most. They also raised issues of undocumented loiterers who commit robberies and break into people’s properties,” he said.
Motaung assured residents that the police were committed to fighting crime in the area. He said while visibility was crucial, it merely delays criminal activities but does not root out the criminals. He also appealed to members of the public to report corrupt police officials.
The community members expressed their appreciation to Motaung for interrupting his hectic schedule to address them. They also told the police officials that they would work together with the police to combat crime.
