Clothes donated to fire victims
JOBURG – Pietersen said he started the collection campaign six months ago.
Jumpas informal settlement residents whose homes were destroyed by a fire on September 17, received clothing from Ward 118 councillor Neuren Pietersen on September 23.
At least 87 shacks were destroyed in the fire.
Pietersen said he started the collection campaign six months ago to assist in times of need.
“I was contacted by residents who had clothes they wanted to donate. I also made an appeal on Facebook for donations. Other councillors helped with the donations. I asked the affected community from Jumpas to collect clothes that people had donated,” he said.
Pietersen thanked residents Nthabiseng Madlebe, Phindiwe Jona and Ntombi Phando who helped him during the collection drive.
“The three women have been cooking for the fire victims,” said Pietersen.
Jona said she volunteered to help the community in order to make a difference.
“It is my way of showing my support to them,” she said.
Jumpas resident Godfrey Sibanda said no words can describe how he feels.
“I am very happy. I lost everything during the fire but now we have been helped with clothes,” he said.
