Some Modderfontein residents are tired of looking at the stormwater pipes located opposite Thornhill Estate.
The pipes have been lying on the abandoned construction site for several years after they were left there by a contractor that was working in the area.
Residents told the NEWS that neither the contractor nor the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has done anything to remove the pipes after construction was abandoned.
Clr Bongani Nkomo, Ward 32, said construction was abandoned after an employee died while working on site.
“As far as I know, the project was done by a contractor that was hired by the JRA and they could not complete it after an employee was killed and construction had to be stopped. I have been communicating with JRA about removing the pipes from the site, but so far nothing has happened,” said Nkomo.
Anita Ferri, a resident, said she has been trying for many years to get JRA to remove these pipes, but they claim that they belong to a contractor.
“This is an eyesore, but I am pretty sure the taxpayer has funded these pipes. We want whoever owns them to remove them as quickly as possible,” said Ferri.
A request for comment was sent to JRA on October 17.
Comment was requested by October 19.
At the time of going to print no comment had been received.
