EMM to repair service road

“The service road is not a formally constructed road. The tar which covers it is only a temporary surface.”

Illiondale resident Darrell Peters recently raised concerns about the condition of the service road parallel to Laurie Road.

The NEWS previously reported that Peters said the road has deteriorated badly in the past five years.

Parts of the road are untarred and uneven and in some places it is blocked by various obstructions.

Peters said despite attempts to purchase a portion of the service road the municipality would not allow him to.

He had hoped to buy the land in order to maintain part of the service road.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) told Peters he could not buy the land as Laurie Road was intended to be a dual carriageway.

When the NEWS visited Peters, infrastructure and a complex (Greenstone View) were seen to be built close to the road.

In response to Peter’s concerns, EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the municipality would attend to the damaged road.

“The service road is not a formally constructed road. The tar which covers it is only a temporary surface,” said Gadebe.

The service road was built by the old town council.

Depending on the severity of the damage to the road, it will either have to be re-tarred or reconstructed.

“Laurie Road was considered for a dual carriageway but that is no longer possible,” said Gadebe.

He said because of the proximity of Greenstone View, there is not enough reserve area for construction of a dual carriageway.

Construction of the complex was allowed by the former town council in 1998.
