The organisers of the show also introduced the Turkish Angora for the first time in Gauteng.

The Breeders of Rex and Sphynx (BRS) hosted a championship show for all breeds of cats on March 17 at the Edenvale Community Centre.

The BRS show has a traditional petting corner where the public can meet and interact with the curly breeds. The show catered for the largest breed in the country, which is the Maine Coons, to the smallest breed, which is the Singapura.

The organisers of the show also introduced the Turkish Angora for the first time in Gauteng.

Nicolene Voget, a Turkish Angora breeder, said the breed originated in the mountainous regions of Turkey, where it developed an unusually soft, medium-long coat for protection against the harsh winters.

“These cats have been in South Africa for a month now. We want to get them recognised as a breed. They are very social, extroverted, adaptable, loving and playfully active cats,” said Nicolene.

The cats were judged in their various classes.
