Joburg East SAPS officer arrests man for possession of unlicensed firearm

JOBURG – The officer picked up the firearm and asked the suspect to see the licence for the firearm which he failed to produce.

A Johannesburg East SAPS Cluster off-duty police officer arrested a 35-year-old man for possession of an unlicensed firearm at the corner of End and Anderson streets in Johannesburg on November 11.

Spokesperson for Jeppe SAPS Capt Richard Munyayi said the officer was driving when he saw the man, who was among a group of people, standing outside an old building.

“The building does not have electricity and it has been one of the hotspots for crime in the area.

“The officer stopped his car and the armed man ran inside the building when he saw him. The officer followed him and the suspect threw the firearm on the ground. The officer picked up the firearm and asked the suspect to see the licence for the firearm which he failed to produce,” he said.

He was arrested and taken to Jeppe SAPS where he was charged and detained.

“The suspect will appear in court soon while police investigations continue,” he said.
