Edenvale: Council for persons with disabilities reaches out to help Soweto centre

“We are incredibly grateful for the generous support from the NCPD and Alpha Pharm. This contribution will go a long way in our home."

Soweto-based special needs centre Ellen Glen received essential healthcare products from Edenvale-based National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD).

The handover, which included much-needed nappies and other supplies, was made recently.

It stemmed from a collaboration between the NCPD and Alpha Pharm, a group of independent community pharmacies.

The NCPD owns and operates the Casual Day Project, which raises funds for the development and maintenance of services to and promotes awareness of the rights, inclusion and challenges of persons with disabilities.

To do this, the project distributes stickers to national Casual Day sticker distributors, such as Alpha Pharm, which are sold to the public at R10 per sticker.

“At the NCPD, we see nappies as an essential health item and an incontinence management product, which many children with disabilities rely on,” said Andre Kalis, specialist of advocacy, policy and children’s matters at the NCPD.

“The sad reality is that most children with disabilities, South Africa’s most vulnerable and marginalised group of children, often sadly go without nappies due to their cost.”

He said the council was thrilled that through the collaboration with Alpha Pharm it could assist in making a difference in the lives of the children at Ellen Glen Special Needs Centre.

The centre founded by Pontso Madona in 2006 is a home for children with psychological and physical impairments and is home to 16 children between the ages of four and 18.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generous support from the NCPD and Alpha Pharm. This contribution will go a long way in our home,” said Madona.
