Properties at the corner of Marias and Winter roads in Bedfordview have been auctioned off to a developer proposing to turn the properties into a step-down and hospice facility.
Ward 20 Cllr Jill Humphreys sees this development as a positive contribution to Bedfordview.
“The developer is going to use the buildings to create a step-down and hospice facility, which is very much needed within the area,” said Humphreys.
“This is also positive due to another development next to the auctioned block, where a shopping centre is proposed to be built. That project still needs to go to tribunal. There are massive objections to the shopping centre. The remaining four houses on the same road have been left exposed. This is why someone has stepped up to buy the whole block to make it into something positive,” said Humphreys.
Humphreys said she is grateful the residents will have this option.
She said the block of six properties have just been auctioned off and does not see any objections when the application goes through for the hospice facility.
“I myself will definitely add positive feedback to the application process,” said Humphreys.
She said the facility will benefit an aging community in Bedfordview.

“We have an elderly community in Bedfordview. They really would not like to leave the area, and the hospice will definitely serve them in this way,” said Humphreys.
She added the facility is not just for the elderly but for anyone who might be ill or in need of care.
“It will definitely serve the area very well,” said Humphreys.
Humphreys said the Bedfordview community will welcome this development.
“I encourage these kinds of the developments, including certain businesses with correct zoning in the area,” said Humphreys.
Humphreys is also looking forward to other developments in 2020.
“Due to a number of blockages with sewerage pips, there is a new process available to alleviate this problem. “The existing sewerage pipes all become a water treatment plant,” said Humphreys.
She said she also has an interested party who is looking to protect the nature’s reserves in Bedfordview, such as the Bill Stewart Nature Reserve and the koppie behind Morninghill.
“There should be conservancies, but there are not,” said Humphreys.
She said she will also look at roof gardens for all the shopping centres in the area.
“It is very doable, and shopping centres are interested taking this up,” said Humphreys.
She said she is very passionate about these projects this year.
