Support Sandi in her hour of need

Sandi has been a pillar of her community and is known for serving others.

Sandi van Tonder, well known for her dedicated work at the Cansa Keurboom Interim Home for Cancer Patients, and her family are going through a difficult time since she was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer.

The doctors said the cancer is only treatable with very high doses of radiation therapy.

Removal is not an option as it has attached itself to the portal vein and Sandi was told chemo will not be effective.

Sandi has taken the decision to not do any of the options given to her.

A crowdfunding page has been established to assist with the costs of pain medication, the service of a nurse and doctor’s visits.

“I’m grateful for the life I have lived. I have an amazing husband and my family has always been supportive of everything I do.
“I’m happy to be surrounded by friends and family even in this difficult time. Every day that I wake up I thank God that I’m able to see another day,” said Sandi.

The 78-year-old has always been passionate about her community and giving to those less fortunate.

Her involvement with Keurboom started almost 25 years ago after she read an article about the home in the newspaper.

Kindness and caring are her way of life and giving positive energy is what she always does.

Hence she identified a need for positive energy at the home and started hosting art classes.

She was eventually invited to join the liaison committee and in 2009 was promoted to care home manager of Keurboom.

Even when she retired the home remained close to heart and she was always willing to help out when needed.

“Now, in her hour of need, my mom needs help too,” said her daughter, Jacqui Vermaak.

Sandi’s medical aid does not cover her pain medication and the supplements she requires.

Jacqui said the crowdfunding will help with the daily costs of ensuring Sandi is comfortable.

“We are asking for people who know mom or who have been touched by her life and her generosity to please reach out and give a little so she and dad don’t have to be worrying about money and whether they will have enough to pay for the meds. She needs medication and the caregiver she relies on to make her comfortable,” said Jacqui.

Jacqui also thanks those who have been supportive of the family.

“We are grateful for our friends who have been here for us and constantly checking up on mom and us. We really appreciate your support, it means the world to us,” said Jacqui.

Those who would like to donate can follow the link to the fund-raising page.
