Firefighters from the City of Ekurhuleni battled a rubble fire with heavy smoke emissions from the tunnel under the Boeing East Road bridge in Bedfordview, on April 14.
Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) district manager media liaison, William Ntladi, said fire suppression operations were carried out on the westbound pillar post of the bridge constructed over the N12 freeway.
“The call was received at 11:56 midday on April 14, and on arrival, crews from three fire stations in the regions, Bedfordview, Edenvale and Primrose, positively identified heavy dense smoke emission from the tunnel under the road bridge,” Ntladi narrated.

He added that at that moment, the burning of recycled materials was positively identified from the vertical tunnel next to the pillar post.
Ntladi said the tunnel’s depth is unknown, and no casualties have been found. The media liaison added, “There are heaps of rubble on each side of the bridge with blankets positively showing that the area is used as a sleeping place.” He noted that a major challenge was poor visibility for motorists, particularly on the westbound N12 freeway.
