Q&A with Dr. Reshoketswe Dijo, Specialist Paediatrician at Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital

At Busamed Modderfontein Private Hospital, our goal is to support families at every step and help our youngest patients thrive.

Q: What inspired you to become a paediatrician?
A: From an early age, I was drawn to the idea of helping others. When I started medical school, I quickly realised my passion for working with children. Children are resilient, honest, and full of life — and playing a part in their growth and development is deeply rewarding.

Q: What are some of the most common conditions you treat?
A: We see a wide range of conditions in paediatrics, from common colds, allergies, eczema and asthma to more serious infections and chronic illnesses. At our hospital, we also focus on preventive care through regular check-ups, vaccinations, and growth monitoring. Early detection is crucial in preventing complications later in life.

Q: How important is vaccination for children?
A: Vaccination is one of the most important tools we have to protect children from serious, potentially life-threatening diseases. It not only protects the individual child but also helps create herd immunity, safeguarding the community. I always encourage parents to discuss any concerns they may have — informed decisions are essential.

Q: What advice would you give to parents about maintaining their children’s health?
A: A balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and open communication are key pillars. I also urge parents to pay attention to their children’s emotional well-being and create an environment where kids feel safe to express themselves.

Q: What do you enjoy most about your work?
A: The smiles and laughter of my patients are the best part of my day. Watching a child recover and seeing the relief on their parents’ faces is incredibly fulfilling. Paediatrics is more than a job — it’s a privilege to be part of each child’s journey.
