Dramatic Bedfordview chase leads to arrest of two for possession of stolen vehicle

Warning shot halts armed suspect as SAPS hunts escaped accomplices after police chase.

Bedfordview SAPS apprehended two suspects on December 17 for possession of a stolen motor vehicle, an unlicensed firearm and stolen property.

While patrolling Elandsfontein, officers noticed suspicious activity involving three vehicles— a white Toyota Hilux single-cab bakkie, a white VW Jetta, and a blue VW Polo sedan—transferring boxes between them on Hattingh Street.

“When officers approached, the vehicles sped off, prompting a chase,” said Bedfordview SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Lillian Modiga.

The VW Jetta was intercepted on Kraft Road, where three suspects were found inside.

One suspect discarded a firearm during the pursuit, while another attempted to escape and was chased by police.

The two were also charged with possession of stolen property.

When the fleeing suspect pulled out a firearm, the officer fired a warning shot to subdue him.

Several suspects managed to escape, but police recovered three boxes of Sony sound systems at the scene.

The two arrested suspects were detained, and the vehicles, along with the firearm, were handed over for evidence.
