Edenvale SAPS communication officer, Warrant Officer Jacob Mashile, urged the public to take extra precautions and adhere to the following safety tips to reduce the risk of becoming a victim:

Vehicle safety tips:
• Do not leave your firearm in the glove compartment or anywhere else inside your vehicle when parked.
• Ensure that all doors and windows are properly locked before leaving your vehicle.
• Lock valuable items such as laptops, handbags, shopping bags, cash, and cameras in the boot and keep them out of sight.
• Be cautious of strangers approaching your vehicle claiming you have a flat tyre — this may be a distraction tactic used by criminals.
• Keep your car doors locked and windows closed, especially when driving through town.
• Avoid using your cellphone while driving unless you have a hands-free kit, as this can attract criminals.
• Park in well-lit areas at night.
• Never leave your keys in the ignition.
• Remove detachable radios or radio faceplates when exiting your vehicle.
• Install an alarm or anti-theft device.
• Use parking areas that have attendants or supervision.
• Choose parking locations that are well-populated and not obscured by bushes or buildings where offenders can hide.
The police encourage the community to stay vigilant and proactive in protecting their property.
