EMPD impounds 12 minibuses in citywide taxi compliance blitz

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD), working with Gauteng Traffic Police and SAPS, impounded 12 Toyota minibuses in Actonville for failing roadworthiness and permit requirements, highlighting ongoing efforts to ensure taxi compliance.

Twelve minibuses were impounded during a joint law enforcement operation conducted by the EMPD Taxi Task Team, in collaboration with Gauteng Traffic Police and the police.

The operation, which focused on taxi compliance across the City of Ekurhuleni, uncovered multiple violations of the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996, including unroadworthy vehicles, absence of operator cards, and taxis operating without the necessary permits.

All 12 minibuses were impounded and transported to the Benoni Provincial Pound.

The EMPD urged all taxi owners and operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and compliant before operating on public roads, emphasising that these operations are critical to improving passenger safety and road compliance across Ekurhuleni.

An EMPD spokesperson said regular inspections and strict enforcement are vital to maintain road safety standards and ensure compliance within the taxi industry.
