Ward 19 Clr Bill Rundle shared on social media that the first reports were received at 20:25. “When I arrived not much was visible from the front. The fire was more on the side and at the back of the building,” shared Rundle.

“It wasn’t long before SAPS, CPF, security companies and many onlookers arrived at the scene. I contacted my colleague Jill Humphreys who managed to get hold of the Bedfordview fire chief to alert them of the fire. Edenvale, Bedfordview, Primrose and Kempton Park firefighters were on the scene by 20:50.

“The fire was contained, however, there was an explosion caused presumably by a gas bottle that was heard for miles. A mother and child were treated for burn wounds and transported by ambulance. No other injuries were reported.”

“The fire crews were left exhausted as they worked in shifts,” said Rundle.

The scene was handed over to the authorities for investigation.
