Bedfordview SPCA comes to the rescue of a dog

On June 28, the SPCA received an anonymous tip-off detailing the horrific abuse that Daisy had been subject to by a 19-year-old man.

The Germiston Bedfordview SPCA has rescued a young female dog after enduring severe abuse from her owner.

At just four months old, Daisy, an Africanis breed was subjected to repeated physical abuse that left her in critical condition.

On June 28 the SPCA received an anonymous tip-off detailing the horrific abuse that Daisy had been subjected by a 19-year-old man.

It is alleged that the man had previously struck Daisy on April 27, resulting in a broken left leg.

The cruelty did not end there.

In May and again in June, Daisy suffered further abuse, culminating in another break in her leg.

When SPCA officers arrived at the suspect’s home, they found Daisy alone outside, trembling and in distress.

The GM and inspector Nkosingiphiwe Sibiya said, “When we arrived, Daisy was sitting outside by the door and was shaking.

“We could see that one of Daisy’s legs was no longer in correct form and that it was not developing properly.”

She was taken to a veterinary clinic for a thorough medical examination.

The report indicated that she had suffered extensive trauma and was placed on cage rest to ensure her leg had sufficient time to heal.

The SPCA opened a case with the SAPS on July 12 and the suspect was arrested on July 15.

Sibiya emphasised the importance of reporting animal abuse.

“Animal abuse cases are just as important, and I want to encourage people to keep on reporting and not wait too long,” he urged.

He also expressed appreciation for the collaboration with law officials but noted the judicial system’s inadequate prioritisation of animal cruelty cases.

“The problem is with the courts is that they still don’t prioritise animal abuse cases even after we submit all the necessary evidence.

“People should not wait too long to report such cases so that we can educate and prevent further cruelty.”

Despite the challenges, the SPCA remains committed to its mission but acknowledges a need for additional resources.
