Subsidence in Edenvale receives attention

“There is a problem here which I don’t believe is being taken seriously,”

Repairs of a subsidence on Palliser Road have brought temporary relief to road users as well as to Ward 18 Ald Heather Hart.

The subsidence, located near the T-junction of Palliser Road and Edendale Road East, was first noticed by Essentially Edenvale in July 2023.

Hart said when the subsidence was assessed it was visible that it extended almost halfway under Palliser Road.

“I assume that the City of Ekurhuleni stuffed the hole full of rubble which will support Palliser Road,” said Hart.

The repairs were conducted by the City of Ekurhuleni on the morning of October 22.

“There is a problem here which I don’t believe is being taken seriously,” highlighted Hart.

Hart said at the intersection she has seen steam rising from nearby stormwater drains.

“The steam indicates a possibility that there may be a damaged sewerage line, what other reason would steam be coming out of the stormwater drain,” asked Hart.

Hart said alongside the potential of a damaged sewerage pipe water had washed away a portion of the soil underneath Palliser Road.

“As far as I understand part of the stormwater infrastructure near the subsidence had collapsed,” said Hart.

She said the collapse of the infrastructure could be contributing to the soil being washed away and causing the subsidence.

Although the municipality has conducted some repairs Hart believes more needs to be done.

“This is not going to solve the long-term problem but there does not appear to be any budget.

“Not only do I now have to drive the budget for this but also for the long list of service delivery issues in Edenvale.

Hart said although she is glad repair work was done she does not believe this is the end of the matter.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the subsidence has been repaired after it was discovered that a stormwater pipe system was leaking.

City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the stormwater pipe was leaking at the joints.

“The stormwater pipe’s joints were repaired by utilising concrete. The subsidence was caused by leaks as well as ageing stormwater infrastructure,” said Dlamini.

He said the site would be re-tared at the start of November.
