The CoE’s DEMS has begun basic first aid and firefighting training for the first group of Community Safety Marshals under its Public Information, Education, and Relations (PIER) subsection.

The Economic Development Department recruited the marshals to assist in data collection for Community Safety MMC Sizakele Masuku’s office.

DEMS media liaison officer Eric Maloka said the training forms part of the city’s strategy to combat rising crime, GBV, and other safety concerns in communities.

“These marshals will provide basic emergency care in life-threatening situations,” said Maloka.

The training focuses on three essential principles of emergency response:

• Preserving life – Marshals will be trained to assess a patient quickly and contact emergency services using the appropriate numbers;
• Promoting recovery – They will learn to calm and reassure patients while controlling life-threatening bleeding;
• Preventing further injury – Marshals will learn to use the correct equipment to avoid worsening injuries.

In addition to first aid, the marshals will learn to identify the prompt activation of fire services when necessary.

This initiative aims to enhance public safety and preparedness, empowering marshals to be proactive in emergency response and crime prevention.
