Bedfordview crime spike prompts safety alert
Crime prevention works best when communities work together, says RAG.
Following the release of South Africa’s latest crime statistics by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, community security NPO RAG has urged Bedfordview residents to remain alert and vigilant.
Although the report showed some positive trends, such as a slight decline in murder rates, Gauteng remains South Africa’s crime capital. Recent incidents in Bedfordview reflect persistently high crime levels.
Here’s RAG’s advice to the community:
Stay alert
Recent incidents of hijacking, follow-home crimes, break-ins, ATM crimes and car thefts in Bedfordview and surrounds reflect the importance of staying alert.

Never be complacent about your security, RAG stressed.
Always lock doors and windows, even when you’re home.
Don’t leave valuables visible in cars.
Be aware of your surroundings, especially when using ATMs or your phone in public.
Be alert when driving home from restaurants or outings, especially as you approach and enter your property.
Make sure you are not being followed.
Do not wear expensive jewellery and watches in public places. Criminals often have “spotters” or informants at shopping centres and malls. They look for luxury brands in particular.

Report every incident and open a case
Community safety depends on accurate data.
Even small crimes should be reported and cases opened so that SAPS and security groups can investigate, apprehend the criminals, and track hotspots and trends.
When minor crimes are allowed to go unchecked, they often escalate into more serious offences. Research indicates that crime breeds more crime and that ignoring lesser offences can create a sense of lawlessness.
This, in turn, fosters an environment where more serious crimes can take root.
Some experts warn that crime in South Africa may be underreported, so your input matters, RAG said.

Get to know your neighbours and look out for each other.
If something feels off, report it immediately – it could save a life. Don’t wait and wonder. Let RAG investigate.
Share security alerts on community emergency WhatsApp groups.
Invest in the best home security and use it.
The most important security measure is an alarm linked to a reputable alarm monitoring and armed response service provider.
Set your alarm every night and whenever you leave the house.
Invest in and use all available layers of security, including an electric fence, security beams, alarm and burglar bars, for comprehensive protection.
Consider outdoor sensor lights.
Consider using AI-enabled cameras to protect vulnerable areas, such as boundary walls alongside parks, open land, reserves, and those backing onto highways, undeveloped stands, municipal servitudes, or golf courses.
Make sure that your gate cannot be lifted off the rails and is tamper-proof. This is how criminals often gain access to property.
Consider installing gate tamper monitoring technology, such as RAG’s innovative Gate Guardian solution, advised RAG.
To keep Bedfordview safer, all residents should stay engaged, report suspicious activity promptly, and support one another.
Residents can report suspicious activity by calling RAG’s 24-hour Control Centre on 082 322 3333 or 011 455 7022.
