Bedfordview pink walk supports cancer charities
“100% of the profits raised by our walk go to our cancer beneficiaries."
Two thousand community members showed solidarity and came together to turn Bedfordview pink when the Shuffling Walking Team hosted its family fun walk for cancer awareness.
Hosted in July, the event started from Bedfordview Country Club raising funds for Breast Health Foundation, Stepping Stone Hospice, East Rand Palliative Care and the Cows for CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation of SA).

According to one of the organisers, Marinda Garrana, the event raised R694,211 for the charities.

She said on the day of the walk, cheques of R120 000 were handed to each charity.
The balance of the funds are reserved for the Shuffling Walking Team Community Cancer Fund which is utilised to assist individuals in the community with cancer related medical expenses.
According to Marinda the Shuffling Walking Team is an NPC which was founded by a group of friends who wanted to effect positive change in the community.
They wanted to do this by raising awareness around cancer and by raising funds for the various cancer orientated charities in the community.

She said as a community project they rely on the support of the community.
“100% of the profits raised by our walk go to our cancer beneficiaries. Any donation or sponsorship assists with reducing costs and ensuring the maximum amount of funds for the cancer charities we support,” said Marinda.
Explaining the origins of the walk,Marinda said many of the NPC’s members have had friends or family members affected by cancer.
“We all carry a shared belief that we need to champion and support the cancer charities that are supporting our communities with their life saving work.”

This year’s walk was the NPC’s 14th awareness walk and described as success.

She said prizes were handed out to best dress group, best dressed man, best dress woman and best dressed boy and girl.
Entertainment was provided by the Zumba Warriors and the Hizi Hizi Belly Dancers.

An auction was also held to help raise additional funds. The NPC thanked the community, walkers, donors and sponsors for their support.
