Gauteng police arrest 1 567 suspects during Operation Shanela crackdown

A multidisciplinary law enforcement team arrested 1 567 suspects during an Operation Shanela across Gauteng for offences ranging from drug dealing to serious violent crimes.

The police in Gauteng have intensified efforts to clean up the province’s streets.

From September 26 to 28, a multidisciplinary team conducting Operation Shanela arrested 1 567 suspects.

The offences included drug dealing, possession of stolen property, contravening the Immigration Act and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The operation across Gauteng’s five districts entailed roadblocks, stop-and-searches, liquor inspections, patrols and vehicle checkpoints.

The SAPS sought over 1 300 people for serious crimes, including murder, rape and robbery and arrested 180 for GBV.

Those arrested will appear in various magistrates’ courts, while others were released after paying fines.
