Bedfordview businesses disconnected for unpaid electricity accounts

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) and the Energy Department have disconnected seven business premises for non-payment and removed several illegal connections during a joint enforcement operation.

The EMPD Cable Theft Unit, working with the city’s Energy Department and other stakeholders, conducted a joint operation targeting businesses and residents with overdue electricity accounts in Bedfordview and Benoni.

According to a statement from the EMPD, seven business premises were disconnected for non-payment.

Several illegal electricity connections were also uncovered and immediately removed by the Energy Department.

The city stated that the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to enforce municipal bylaws, recover revenue, promote responsible electricity use, and protect municipal infrastructure from abuse.

Residents and business owners are urged to settle outstanding municipal accounts and refrain from tampering with infrastructure.

The EMPD warned that illegal connections may lead to penalties, prosecution or further enforcement action.
