SAPS urges holidaymakers to prioritise water safety as incidents rise
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a public alert reminding communities to follow essential water safety guidelines to prevent drownings and water-related emergencies this festive season.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has called on residents across the country to remain vigilant around water this festive season, highlighting a series of simple but potentially life-saving safety measures.
With many families expected to travel, swim or visit rivers and dams during the holidays, SAPS emphasised that understanding basic water safety could significantly reduce the risk of drowning and related emergencies.
According to SAPS, individuals should always check the strength of the current before entering any body of water, particularly rivers and fast-flowing streams.

When caught in a strong current, the public is advised to travel feet first to protect the head and reduce the risk of serious injury.
Parents and guardians are also reminded to keep a close eye on children at all times, as young swimmers are especially vulnerable.
The police further encouraged community members to save emergency numbers on their phones to ensure quick response times during incidents.
SAPS provided additional guidance on what to do if someone unexpectedly falls into water and cannot stand.
In such situations, the individual should remain calm, avoid swallowing water and keep their head above the surface while attempting to regain control or call for help.
The organisation hopes that by observing these precautions, communities can enjoy safer recreational activities near water over the festive period.
