Residents and staff enjoy festive birthday bash at Thembalami Care Centre

Thembalami Care Centre, with the Max Ordman Deaf Association (MODA), hosted its monthly birthday bash on November 19, celebrating residents and staff with music, dancing, sing-alongs, and gifts from the occupational therapy team.

The event took place in the centre’s main dining hall, where the atmosphere was lively and festive.

Occupational therapist Tsakani Shihlomule said: “We danced to Pastor Roy Edwards’ music mix, and the residents really enjoyed the songs, singing along enthusiastically. Those who were able to stand joined in the dancing, creating a wonderful, lively atmosphere.”

This month, the centre celebrated the birthdays of four staff members, including centre manager Esme van der Walt, who turned 60 on November 12.

Deputy manager Elize Raath noted that eight residents were also celebrated, with the eldest, Martie Robinson, turning 94 on November 4. Just behind her in age was Maureen Wigoder, who celebrated her 90th birthday on November 19.

The youngest resident celebrated was Nokwasi Mthembu, who turned 75 on November 12, while Lydia Batchelor, who turns 78 on November 25, was the only resident unable to attend.

The highlight of the day was the musical performance by Edwards, who sang classic favourites that the residents could sing along to.

Resident Martie Robinson said it was one of the best birthday bashes she had ever attended.

The centre’s occupational therapy department also distributed small gifts to all residents and staff, adding a thoughtful touch to the celebrations.
