Community volunteers clear dangerous concrete spills from Linksfield Road

Community volunteers joined forces with Better Edenvale and Better Senderwood to remove dangerous concrete spills from Linksfield Road, improving safety for motorists and road users in the area.

Brothers Angelo and Michael Frantzekos decided that the lumps of spilt concrete on Linksfield Road were a risk to motorists and other road users for long enough.

They recently launched a project to remove them and asked the NPO Better Edenvale for assistance to get this important job done.

Better Senderwood got involved, too, offering the additional manpower needed.

“This was a real community effort,” said Better Edenvale director Louis Ioulianou. He noted that concrete spillage is a major concern on South African roads, and Linksfield Road was badly affected.

After community members launched a project to remove concrete from Linksfield Road Better Edenvale and Better Senderwood lent a hand to assist to make the road safer.

“The hardened spills pose a risk to all road users. Drivers must often swerve to avoid them. Filled with sharp stones, the dried concrete on the road can be harder and more hazardous than a road bump, causing considerable damage to vehicles and tyres.”

When trucks spill concrete, it is usually because they are overfilled, and the spill often happens on an uphill road.

By taking action and working together, Better Edenvale, Better Senderwood and the Frantzekos brothers have helped to make Linksfield Road safer for everyone.

Ioulianou noted that Angelo and Michael’s community spirit and leadership highlighted the impact that active citizenship can have in maintaining and improving public spaces.

He also thanked Build It for the truck that was kindly offered for the project.

“Small actions can have a big impact in building better, safer, stronger neighbourhoods.”

Residents and all local businesses are encouraged to get involved in initiatives like this and to contribute to ongoing efforts to improve their area.
