Local karate academy needs support for world championships
According to Shihan Russell Sim, the costs of the trip are estimated to be about R60 000 per person.
Twenty-nine karateka from the Goju Kai St Andrew’s Academy have been selected for the World Championships taking place in August 2025 in Chiba Japan.
The academy is currently raising funds and appealing to the community to support its efforts.

“It’s quite heavy on people’s pockets. One parent always goes with so it’s double, or there is more than one child so the costs are triple that amount. We are trying to help them by raising funds,” shared Sim.
The dojo plans on hosting various fundraising events to assist with these costs including market days and barnyard sales.
They are also welcoming sponsorships and donations from the public.
For those interested in karate the academy offers a week’s free trial classes.

They train twice a week.
“Our athletes have worked hard to get into the national team. We had our South African Championships about four weeks ago as a province, that’s all our karate schools together and we brought home 106 medals.”
