Bedfordview Bowling Club to host 2025 Disability Championships

“Our centenary is on April 6, 2025, and we are still in the planning stages for a big weekend of competitive bowls with lots of prizes," said Des Londal, president of the BBC.

This was a landmark year for the Bedfordview Bowling Club (BBC), which hosted the National Championships and saw its fours team win the trophy.

The Johannesburg Bowling Association also named it the club of the year.

“We received nothing but praise from the participants all over the country competing.

“The greens were in immaculate condition, plus the changes to our clubhouse were complete.

“There are still some additions in the planning stage, which will be completed in the new year (covering the patio and floodlights for the greens),” said the club’s president, Des Londal.

Londal said their biggest challenge was the pitiful rain, “We go to great expense giving both greens a full spring treatment, with outside contractors coming in to do the levelling of them, but without rain, it is a major concern.

“We are fortunate we have a borehole, but nothing compares to good old rain.”

Their biggest community fundraiser was in support of the Hatzolah Medical Rescue. Every year, members and visitors dig deep to come out and support this event.

Several members, including the ladies and disability bowlers, win medals in the various outside competitions.

“We have close ties with the Johannesburg Children’s Home and continue to try and grow our development bowls on Saturdays. Unfortunately, with all the outside distractions, it has been challenging,” he said.

The greens are open on Friday afternoons to promote barefoot bowls, and new players are welcome to come and have fun with friends. The club has qualified coaches on hand to help.

“Our main goal is to bring in new players, especially ladies, because bowls is a sport anybody can play and is a relatively cheap sport to participate in.

“It is also a social sport, especially after the game when players enjoy a cold refreshment or two.”

On December 16, they hosted their fun day, Bring a Buddie, where family and friends got together and had a great time playing bowls.

“Our centenary is on April 6, 2025, and we are planning a big weekend of competitive bowls with many prizes. We will be hosting the National Disability Bowls competition in April 2025.

“Finally, a big thank you must go to our sponsors, members and staff, who all played an integral part in our achievements in 2024. There is only ‘One View’, and that is Bedfordview.

“Wishing all our members’ friends and suppliers a joyous Christmas and a happy New Year,” said Londal.
