Locals urged to support Edenvale’s annual marathon on March 9

Through the online entry platform, entrants can also select a chosen charity to support.

Organisers of the Edenvale Marathon, the Edenvale Rand Road Warriors Running Club, have been hard at work in preparing for the annual event to ensure that the entrants have a wonderful experience on race day.

Taking place on March 9, the marathon, which starts and ends at Edenvale High School, will see runners flock to Edenvale.

According to race director Robin Hide, there are several critical components which need to be handled on race day to ensure the success of all who participate.

These components are held together by members of the club’s voluntary race organising committee and club members who volunteer their time.

Volunteers not only give up their time on race day but in the weeks leading up to race day, without which, there would be no event.

Important components of the event include safe and secure parking, the start infrastructure, route management (including the two vital aspects of marshals and water points), security at the event and on the route, the finish field (which includes finishers medals and complimentary post-race refreshments), the hosting of visiting clubs, food and soft drink vendors, race announcements and public address, an onsite medical facility, athlete doping control and the vitally important Joint Operations Centre (JOC).

“On the 21km double lap marathon route, there are seven water points to serve the athletes and a further one waterpoint on the 15km event with one on the 5km fun run,” Hide explained.

Hide said with this in mind there are opportunities for local businesses and residents to get directly involved in the event.

This includes the sponsoring and staffing of water points, sponsoring and managing the two parking areas and event sponsorship itself.

Hide explained that the running club makes donations to Edenvale High School, Don Matera Child and Youth Care Centre and Dowerglen High School from proceeds generated by the event.

Don Matera CYCC and Dowerglen High are used as parking venues for the event.

“Additionally, through our online entry platform, entrants can also select a chosen charity to support.

‘We have nominated the Lions of Edenvale, Essentially Edenvale and the Edenvale Community Policing Forum as the charities for the 2025 event,” said Hide.

With less than two months to go and plenty of work to be done, RRW shows no signs of slowing down for the annual running spectacular through the streets of Edenvale.
