Joburg City FC and East Rand Athletic battle it out despite the rain

The Greek Sporting Club hosts U17 boys from Joburg City FC and East Rand Athletic Club for the Gauteng Development League match.

As part of the Gauteng Development League, Joburg City FC faced East Rand Athletic Club at the Greek Sporting Club on October 12.

U17 Joburg City FC coach Sechaba Mothibeli said the rainy weather had affected their preparation, forcing the team to focus on video sessions that week instead.

Mothibeli also highlighted the financial challenges of competing in the league. “Being in this league is expensive because there is equipment that’s needed.

“Almost every quarter, there are tournaments that some can’t attend because of financial reasons. There are also coaches who require assistance in terms of salaries. At times, it gets a bit tough for the Club.”

Looking ahead, Mothibeli said Joburg City FC would face Supersport United on the same field.

“They are number one on the log, and we are number eight. We are trying to stay in the top eight or move higher. So, it will be a tough encounter, but the boys are up for it.”

East Rand Athletic Club chairman Musa Khanyeza said their team was well prepared but noted that playing on a Sunday made it difficult for families to attend due to other commitments, including religious ones.

“We’re hoping to get some help. We have applied for funds and are still waiting for answers.”

The match was temporarily paused when it started raining, as both teams discussed whether to continue or postpone the game.
