Edenvale Hospital intern represents SA at soccer tournament in Spain

Balancing a healthcare internship and his love for soccer, Edenvale’s Sisanda Hlengwa represented South Africa in Spain, proving that passion and hard work open international doors.

Sisanda Hlengwa recently represented South Africa at a soccer tournament in Spain.

His journey was not just about competing but also about gaining international exposure, building friendships, and growing as a sportsman.

Eighteen-year-old Sisanda Hlengwa proved that hard work can open many doors. After matriculating in 2024, Hlengwa joined Edenvale Regional Hospital as a pharmacy intern in July 2025, where he learned valuable skills in healthcare.

But beyond the hospital walls, Hlengwa chased another passion, soccer, a sport he had loved since the age of eight. Hlengwa plays for Jomo Cosmos under the ABC Motsepe League and has been with the team since 2019.

Inspired by his parents, who both played soccer in their youth, Hlengwa was determined to make them proud. Hlengwa explained that his greatest inspiration has always been his mum.

Sisanda Hlengwa who joined Edenvale Regional Hospital as a pharmacy intern in July represented South Africa when he competed in the Madrid Youth Tournament Leadership Academy.

“She was a talented soccer player, and growing up, she would spend time playing with me and teaching me important tactics and skills,” he said.

Born and raised in KwaZulu-Natal, Hlengwa had always dreamed of taking his talent overseas, and that dream became a reality earlier this year.

In August, Hlengwa travelled to Spain to participate in the Madrid Youth Tournament Leadership Academy.

He represented the Jomo Cosmos youth team and played as both a right wing and a central defensive midfielder.

The tournament gave young players like Hlengwa the chance to compete against top youth teams from around the globe. When asked how he felt about the opportunity, Hlengwa said he felt excited and a little nervous.

“Playing soccer overseas had been my dream since I was a child. I wanted to show what I could do and make my parents and the Edenvale Hospital team proud.”

Describing his experience, Hlengwa said it was incredible.

“Everything went smoothly, and although we did not win, we gained a great deal of valuable experience.

“I learned new soccer tactics and even made friends with players from other teams in Spain. The hospitality was outstanding. I had the opportunity to meet many wonderful people.”

One of the challenges Hlengwa noted was adapting to the climate. He said he had to get used to very high temperatures, almost reaching 50°C.

“Another highlight was playing matches late at night, around 21:00. This was perfect because it allowed us to avoid the intense daytime heat and enjoy the cooler evenings.”

Hlengwa said that although his team did not win during the tournament, one of his teammates was scouted and now plays for a second-division team in Hungary.

Discussing where he sees himself in five years, Hlengwa said he aims to play professional football at an international level. He said he hopes to continue growing as a player and inspiring young athletes to pursue their dreams.

Thabile Mkhatshwa, communications manager at Edenvale Regional Hospital, said the community of Edenvale Hospital is proud of Hlengwa and wishes him well going forward.
