Dowerglen BMX prodigy Tyler Morello shines in 2025 season

Dowerglen resident and BMX rising star Tyler Morello ended last year on a high note after achieving numerous accolades during the 2025 season.

The 12-year-old received his Gauteng colours last year when he placed first at the Gauteng provincial series.

He was first in his age group in the club series while riding for his home club, Kempton Park BMX Club.

Morello said that being awarded his colours felt exceptionally good.

In 2024, Morello also received his provincial colours. Since then, he has grown from strength to strength, improving his abilities and skills, rising through the ranks, and cementing his name as a top athlete.

Throughout his 2025 season, Morello kept up his pace, winning several races and competing in the national series.

The first set of national races was in Hermanus, where Morello dominated his age group and was set for the year ahead.

However, a fractured wrist meant that he couldn’t compete in the second set of nationals in Pietermaritzburg.

Although this was a setback, Morello came back stronger than ever, and during the third and last set of nationals in Kempton Park, he placed second in South Africa in his age group.

His mom, Chantelle Morello, explained that since he was young, Tyler has had a passion for bicycles.

Through the sport, Tyler has learned self-discipline.

“He never gives up and always puts in the effort. He learned self-composure and learned to take both wins and losses. The sport has taught him a lot,” she said.

Morello explained that he loves being with his friends and the competitive aspect of the sport.

Looking to the future, Morello would like to compete in the World BMX Championships.
