Edenvale’s 10-year-old bowler shines as Ekurhuleni U18s win Gauteng Challenge
Edenvale resident Ryan Lindeque (10) has emerged as a rising lawn bowls star after helping the Ekurhuleni U18 team secure victory at the Gauteng Challenge and qualify for the Junior National Inter Districts Tournament.
Edenvale resident and bowler Ryan Lindeque (10) is making waves in the lawn bowls community as a rising star following his team’s success at the Gauteng Challenge.
Having earned his place as the youngest member of the Ekurhuleni U18 side, Ryan and his team delivered an exceptional performance by winning the Gauteng Challenge.

The challenge was recently held at Delville Bowling Club in Germiston on January 17 and 18.

The team’s victory has secured their place in the Inter Districts Tournament, a national event taking place in Bloemfontein at the end of March.
Following the victory, Ryan said he feels proud and excited and can’t wait to go to Bloemfontein to represent Ekurhuleni in the Junior Nationals.
Speaking about the Gauteng Challenge, Ryan said Sedibeng were tough opponents.
He said that they were good players and it was a close game.
Ryan, a proud member of Edenvale Bowling Club, started playing lawn bowls last June.
The club offers free coaching on Saturday mornings for all ages, and after trying out the sport, Ryan took to it.
Club member Brian Sayce coached him, loaned him his first set of bowls, and encouraged him to stick with the sport.
Ryan said what he enjoys most about the sport is the strategy required to play it.

As a rising bowler, Ryan hopes to one day represent his country in an international tournament and have his name written in gold on one of the boards of honours at the Edenvale Bowling Club.
Speaking about his role models, Ryan identified several bowlers.
He said, “Brian Sayce because he is the best coach and has helped me with my technique, as well as Mathews Phiri and Joyce Wilkinson because they are the best bowlers in my club.”
Giving advice to young aspiring bowlers interested in getting into the sport, Ryan said it is fun and that everyone should try it.
