JCC focuses on grass roots cricket

The Johannesburg Cricket Club (JCC) has been in existence for 21 years and has regularly been a part of the cricket landscape in Gauteng.

The JCC has been at the grass roots of cricket.

The club has focused on the inner city of Johannesburg and attracts children from the surrounding schools in the area.

“We hope to bring cricket to the inner city and create a hope village, where the children can have a sense of place, identity and self worth,” said Mr Indarin Govender, chairman of the JCC.

The JCC has nine teams affiliated to the Gauteng Cricket Board.

“Our key aim is to promote the spirit of volunteerism, making sure that the spirit of giving and teaching is an ethos we live by,” explained Mr Govender.

The club recently sent its U/17 team to Corfu in Greece, to take part in an international tournament where 10 teams from around the world took part. The U/17 team won the tournament.

“We have engaged the Johannesburg Development Agency with a view of constructing the first-ever cricket oval in the city, which indicates the objectives we want to achieve in bringing cricket to the inner city,” said Mr Govender.

The JCC conducts coaching clinics every Saturday morning at no fee.
