Club performs admirably in marathon
This year’s race, which spanned over 80km and ending in the town of Cradock, proved to be a competitive and demanding marathon.
The annual Hansa Fish Canoe Marathon, hosted in Cradock in the Eastern Cape, took place on 27 and 28 September.
Richard Cele, the Victoria Lake Canoe Club’s (VLC) coach, and Joshua Loots from Bedfordview were the first club paddlers from VLC to finish in a time of six hours, just missing a spot in the top 100.
This year’s race, which spanned over 80km and ending in the town of Cradock, proved to be a competitive and demanding marathon.
It was a challenging marathon as a cold front whipped up the wind and large waves swamped several boats.
Roy Clegg with Dan Coetzer were the next finishers, followed by Colin Ledwaba with Katiso Hlahatsi from the club’s development programme.
They finished in 6 hours 16 minutes. The Hansa Fish Canoe Marathon is a popular A-grade race with a guaranteed water release. Canoeists flock to the little Karoo town to enjoy the wild water obstacles on the fast flowing Fish River.
The marathon is also a fabulous social weekend for the whole family, with bands, parties and guest entertainers. This year saw Theuns Jordaan and Centre Stage entertaining those in attendance.
